Choosing Between an Electrical or Gas Furnace

When it comes to choosing the right furnace for your home, you’ll likely either have to make up your mind between an electrical or gas furnace. However, often, this can be easier said than done without knowing the facts. That’s why the Melton Heating and Air Conditioning team has gathered some of the most important things to consider for you here.

Below you’ll find everything you need to determine what type of furnace, electric or gas, is right for you!

Electrical Furnace PROs & CONs

One of the foremost advantages to installing an electric furnace over a gas model is that they’re much cheaper and can also last quite a long time, up to 30 years in some cases. They also require minimal maintenance. However, there are a few important things to note regarding electrical furnaces, the first being that they can cost more to operate over the long run, making your electrical bill spike.

Additionally, electrical furnaces also put out drier air than gas furnaces, which some may find unpleasant, especially those who suffer from allergies and respiratory issues. Lastly, if your power goes out, so does your electrical furnace.

Gas Furnace PROs & CONs

As mentioned above, electrical furnaces can be a drain on energy costs. However, where gas furnaces are concerned, they can be extremely efficient. Not only is natural gas clean and affordable, but it can also cost upwards of 70 percent less each month than electric furnaces, meaning you’ll save a bundle on energy costs. Gas furnaces produce warmer air much more quickly, a big plus during those colder months.

There are some downsides, however, to gas furnaces. They emit carbon monoxide, which can affect the air quality in your home and cause the need for carbon monoxide detectors to ensure any leaks are dealt with ASAP. They also don’t usually last as long as electric furnaces, requiring replacement about every 15 years.

Hybrid Furnaces

Nowadays, those who can’t decide between a gas or electrical furnace needn’t worry, as there are also hybrid options that offer the best of both worlds.
